Avalanche Map Project
The Turnagain Pass Avalanche Atlassing and Survey (T.P.A.A.S.) is a project that began October 1, 2004 and was completed March 2006.
The purpose of T.P.A.A.S. is a multiple-phased plan that will enhance the safety of backcountry users, mountain rescue groups and avalanche forecasting in Turnagain Pass by compiling aerial photographs in the Turnagain Pass corridor for each run, drainage and avalanche path from The Turnagain Arm South to Johnson Pass, East to Placer Valley and West to Seattle Creek. The best estimation is there are more than 75 paths to document, name and field truth for latitude, longitude and elevation. Information on run out distances will involve path history, and current/past vegetation.

Uses for this project are numerous. Indexing all of this terrain will benefit backcountry users by clarifying peak and run names in arenas commonly used by recreationists, and current photographs to assist in terrain management and route selections. Furthermore, historical values will be attached to each path to include incident, date and outcome to assist in avalanche forecasting. This product will be available to the U.S.F.S. State of Alaska , Alaska State Troopers and Mountain rescue at no cost.
Later phases of the project will include digital cartography and overlays of avalanche paths in high altitude imaging.
