Avalanches Across Alaska 2008

Snow Dynamics will be conducting free avalanche awareness courses in the popular Avalanches Across Alaska series starting January 5, 2008.

These courses are eight hours in length, and cover topics that are relevant for all mountain travellers in alaska.

Pre-registration is required for all programs.  You can call 907.775.2600 or email snow_dynamics@yahoo.com for more information.

These classes are sponsored by a grant from the State of Alaska Department of Public Safety.

Level two courses:

In 2008, Snow Dynamics has teamed up with Southeast Alaska Backcountry Adventures (http://skiseaba.com/) to provide the ultimate level two course.  Using a snowcat to access the backcountry, Snow Dynamics avalanche instructors and SEABA guides will illustrate the skills necessary to make quality avalanche forecasting decisions in the backcountry.  The terrain in Haines is unparalleled in Alaska, and provides the perfect backdrop for this advanced avalanche safety course.

Snow Dynamics level two courses are classroom and field-based avalanche safety programs for skiers, snowboarders, and snowmachiners.  The curriculum is based in American Avalanche Association (http://www.americanavalancheassociation.org/education.html) and the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (http://www.avtraining.org) guidelines.

Courses are four days and thirty two hours in length.  These demanding classes ensure participants acquire the knowledge necessary to make good decisions in the backcountry. All avalanche safety courses are conducted IN AVALANCHE TERRAIN, with venues dependent on the conditions.  Liability waivers are required.

The cost of the course includes:

- Level two avalanche course registration.
- Lodging and food at the Fort Seward Lodging in Haines, Alaska.
- Transportation.
- Snowcat and guiding service.

The dates for the 2008 Level two course is March 11-15, 2008 in Haines, Alaska.
The course cost is $975.00 and is all inclusive.
More information and registration is available by calling 877.617.3418 or by visiting www.skiseaba.com.

READ: You must be able to ski/snowboard at an advanced intermediate level off trail.

If you cannot ski/snowboard at this level, please find other avalanche courses offered in the private courses listing HERE: www.avalanche.org

The reason for this requirement is to allow for the entire class to be able to travel and learn at an expected level.  It positively increases the learning and outcome for all participants when we are free to travel as a group.  Skiers are required to have ski skins, and the ability to ascend with skis on the snow.  Snowboarders must have a splitboard OR snowshoes.  No exceptions.

Level one courses

Snow Dynamics will not be offering level one courses in 2008 due to the Avalanches Across Alaska contract
